In july 2014, The Carlton Club ran a competition called 'The Bar Dream' with the opportunity of designing, constructing and running your own bar for one month.
Firecracker, in collaboration with Setsquare Studio submitted a successful application with 'PIckleback'. Popular in bars in New York, but only in a few venues in Melbourne, a Pickleback is a shot of whiskey, chased by a shot of pickle juice.
Drawing on the green of the pickle and the gold of the whiskey, this palette was carried through from the wall colot, timber trimmings and in the rotating weekly floral installations. Setsquare and Bobby Brave constrcuted a 'jar bar' using welded reinforcing mesh sprayed gold and backed with gold acrylic mirror to give the illusion of repetition and vastness. It also provided a clever storage solution for 120kg of pickles in a space of 2.5m x 3m.
On a shoe string budget of only $500, and with only three days for construction, the generous donations from the below sponsors also made PICKLEBACK possible:
